Piri piri (used as a seasoning or marinade) is Portuguese in origin and "especially prevalent in Angola, Namibia, Mozambique and South Africa. There are accounts of it being brought back from Christopher Columbus’ trips to the Americas and planted in its colonies in Mozambique and Angola – where it was given its Swahili christening. If you like your spice seasonings packing the heat then this one is for you!
If used as a sauce, it is usually mixed with lemon juice or another very acidic base to assist in the transfer of flavors. The dry mix can be mixed with oil and made into a paste as well.
